Coat Patterns[]

All dachshunds have one, and only one, self color. Any pattern can be superimposed over any self, or solid, color; for instance, black and tan dapple. The color is named first, followed by the pattern, if any.

Dapple[]

This pattern comes from spots that are white or lighter than the base color. If the dappling occurs in the eyes, the eyes are blue. One parent must be dappled if you wish to breed dapple puppies.

Double Dapple[]

Accured only when both parents are dapple. But this doesn't mean all puppies are dappled or double dappled, puppies might also be solid color. This pattern has more white areas than dapple. Because the risk of eye and hearing problems, this type of breeding is usually forbidden or not recommended.

Brindle[]

Also known as Tiger pattern. It resembles stripes of a tiger. Commonly seen with red color and very rare with other colors.

Piebald[]

Piebald pattern only appears when both parents are carrying the Piebald gene. Has full areas of color on a white base (See foxterrier). Can also have so called ticking with is small spots in the white areas. Very rare pattern outside US.

Dapple Piebald[]

This comes from breeding a dapple carrying for piebald to a piebald and/or from breeding a solid carrying piebald to a dapple carrying piebald. The dog will appear to look like a double dapple even though it is not. Usually they are registered as dapples. This pattern is also forbidden, not recognized or not recommended in many countries.

Brindle Piebald[]

This pattern is commonly seen on red piebald. The base color (red) will have stripes of black in the color with the piebald pattern also showing.

Butters

Sable[]

This term is often mistakenly used to refer to an interspersion of black hairs on back and neck over red color. The undercoat beneath being red, Sable/Wildboar is a very heavy layer of black over the base coat color. Many pups will lose the black color when they come older, so the color might get registered wrong. This pattern is very rare unlike the black hairs over red base.
